sad for quinn {and me}

why do we seem to have some sort of mishap when i work that night?
quinn was a bit sleepy so i was changing his diaper yesterday afternoon before a {hopeful} nap.  this process resembles wrestling an alligator in parts so when i am done i always say "ok go."  he then quickly turns himself over and takes off crawling.  this was exactly what happened yesterday.  but then the poor thing misjudged his step and took a small nose-dive off the carpeted section of his room and bumped his little face.  he cried so i picked him up immediately and held him, thinking "no big deal, just a small fall."  then i saw some blood on my shoulder where his little mouth had been.  what the heck?  and there was a lot {or it seemed like  a lot} in his mouth and he was really crying.  he wouldn't let me look at his mouth to see where this was all coming from.  so i tear into the bathroom, throw on the lights, grab a towel off the hook, throw it on the bathroom floor {cause yuck...floors are dirty}, lay crying, bleeding son down and pin him between my legs. i went through a ton of wet paper towels to soak up the blood and finally locate the culprit.  it seemed he had severed or bit through or did something to his upper lip frenulum.  he was still crying but also swallowing curiously.  once i knew where it was coming from, i felt a bit better, but it still needed to stop already or we were about to high-tail it to the ER {imagine overreacting mom who happens to be a nurse yet forgets all her training at the first sign that her son is hurt and arrives frazzled and weepy to the emergency room}.  so i do the next best thing: right to the boob.  he began to nurse and nurse and nurse.  came up for air once or twice and i noticed only a little blood on me.  nursing is the best, it is a cure-all!    then he fell asleep in my arms for two and a half hours.  that marked the longest nap EVER in his mere eleven months.  but of course, i could not sleep at all because i was watching him to make sure there was no trickle of blood coming from his mouth,  was googling "ripped upper lip frenulum" on my phone with my free hand, and was too wound up to actually rest despite needing to work that night.  ugh!  he eventually awoke with no recollection of what had happened to him pre-nap.  my brave little man.

  1. I was reading and feeling just sick for you and how terrifying those moments of helplessness must have felt! My goodness, mothers have to be so incredibly brave every day. Brave little man and brave mommy too.

  3. Poor baby, I am glad he is okay. Nursing really is a cure all! When my oldest daughter was three months old she was stung by a bee. My first instinct was to nurse her and she calmed right down :) Yay for breastfeeding.

  4. That is so scary! My little guy got his first bloody lip a few weeks ago. Oh, the blood. Terrifying! Glad he's ok...and that he took a 2.5 hour nap. :)

  5. Oh my. Behr has tongue tie and had to have it cut - with scissors! - in the hospital. It was so hard to see blood coming from his mouth. I totally know how you feel, even if mine was doctor induced rather than an unexpected accident. I nursed immediately after the "surgery." Breast milk really is an incredible thing.
